Job Opportunity: Deputy Fire Chief of EMS – City of Saco

The City of Saco is seeking an experienced and dynamic leader to join our team as the Deputy Fire Chief of EMS. This critical role will oversee the administration and operations of the Saco Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS), ensuring that we continue to meet and exceed professional standards and comply with state and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establishing and managing EMS protocols, policies, and procedures with input from the Fire Chief and EMS Medical Director
  • Supervising staff recruitment, training, certification, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions
  • Assisting with strategic planning, operational budgeting, and responding to fire and EMS calls as part of the Incident Command structure
  • Managing EMS resources, including medical supplies, equipment, and vehicles
  • Serving as the department’s Designated Infection Control Office
  • Participating in the on-call admin rotation with a 30-minute response time

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in EMS leadership, strong communication skills, and a commitment to public safety. 

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of career experience in the fire service and pre-hospital emergency medical services, including supervisory and management roles or equivalent combination of experience and training required.
  • Associate’s degree in Fire Science and/or Paramedicine; bachelor’s preferred.
  • Fire Officer I & II, Certification Pro Board or Equivalent
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Maine Paramedic license.
  • Must hold or obtain Maine EMS Instructor/Coordinator certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must hold or obtain a Designated Infection Control Officer Certificate within six months of hire.
  • FEMA NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400 and 700
  • Vocational education to include but not limited to ICS/Fireground Command, Hazardous Materials, Marine Fire/Rescue Operations, Wildland Fire, and Special Rescue Operations
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Maine Driver’s license.

DESIRED MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong Leadership and Management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead and coordinate emergency response teams
  • Experienced in budget management and financial analysis
  • Experienced user of Fire Services records Management programs, CAD interface with fire service operations, municipal budget programs, and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Proven fire service leader
