Equipment Mechanic I - City of Lewiston

Accepting applicants for EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I with the City of Lewiston’s Public Works Department. Applications are available at the Human Resources Department or online at www.lewistonmaine.gov

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Division:         Municipal Garage

Barg. Unit:      AFSCME Public Works

Status:             Full-Time, 40+ hours per week, Evening Shift

Grade:             4 [starting at $21.43/hour]

SUMMARY: This entry-level position makes minor repairs and adjustments to automobiles, trucks, trailers and equipment while gaining knowledge and developing skills which will prepare for advancement to other positions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, with two (2) years general fleet maintenance/garage related work, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Willing to train the right candidate. Qualified candidates must have excellent communication, computer and office skills; display attention to detail and be able to work in a team environment.

REQUIREMENTS: Qualified candidates must have a valid Maine driver’s license in good standing. Preference given to candidates with valid Class B CDL and State Motor Vehicle Inspection license, but must be able to obtain both Class B license and State Motor Vehicle Inspection license (with ADT endorsements) within 12 month trial period.

WORK ACTIVITIES: Performs minor repairs/adjustments such as replacing brakes, suspension, lighting, and body components. May complete some minor electrical work. Services engines and transmissions on automobiles, light to medium trucks, and light equipment. Tests and services various automotive batteries. Changes tires at the garage or in the field, as needed. Changes oil, filters and other general maintenance items including greasing lubricating systems and individual moving parts, as needed. Services and repairs pneumatic hand tools and other small tools. Performs minor repairs on snow maintenance equipment such as cutting edges, hydraulic hoses and other items. Once class B license is obtained, will operate trucks and equipment and assist with plow operations. Prepares accurate records of work completed and parts used. Performs other duties as assigned.
