Equipment Mechanic II - City of Lewiston

Accepting applicants for EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II with the City of Lewiston’s Public Works Department. Applications are available at the Human Resources Department or online at www.lewistonmaine.gov

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Division:         Municipal Garage

Barg. Unit:      AFSCME Public Works

Status:             Full-Time, 40+ hours per week, Evening shift

Grade:             6 [starting at $23.64/hour]

 

SUMMARY: This mid-level position provides the opportunity for on-the-job skill development, which will allow for potential advancement to a Grade 8 Equipment Mechanic position upon successful completion of hands-on and written competency at/after first year of employment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, with three (3) years experience in mechanical repairs for automotive and light trucks, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Heavy vehicle and/or heavy construction equipment knowledge is a plus! Willing to train the right candidate. Qualified candidates must have excellent communication, computer and office skills; display attention to detail and be able to work in a team environment.

REQUIREMENTS: Qualified candidates must have a valid Maine driver’s license in good standing. Candidates should have a valid Class B CDL, or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment. Must be able to obtain State Motor Vehicle Inspection license (with ADT endorsements) within 12 month trial period. A.S.E. certifications are a plus, but must be able to obtain.

WORK ACTIVITIES: Inspect/diagnose cars, vans, light trucks and both gasoline and diesel engines to determine repairs needed. Diagnose/repair brakes, transmissions, differentials, universal joints, motors, ignitions, carburetors and hydraulic systems on vehicles, light trucks and trailers. Work with Class “A” mechanics to learn diagnostics and repair processes for heavy equipment (including, but not limited to: backhoes, tractors, street sweepers, snow loaders, cranes, forklifts, and other large equipment). Install/fit parts, repair cooling systems, and adjust brakes, clutches, ignitions and carburetion. Operate automotive test equipment and power tools, may perform acetylene, cutting and brazing. Once class B license is obtained, will operate trucks and equipment and assist with plow operations. Prepare accurate records of work completed and parts used. Participate in ongoing departmental training. Performs other duties as assigned.
