Recruiting and Hiring 101
Agenda:
9:00 - 10:15 am - The Recruiting Process
Every recruiting process is unique but there are some best practices that every recruiter should keep in mind. This session will cover how to prepare to fill a vacancy, the components of an eye-catching advertisement, responsible use of AI, advertising on social media, union considerations, and some tips to attract candidates to apply for hard-to-fill jobs.
Presenter: Shae Gonzalez, City Recruiter for Portland
10:15 - 10:30 am - Break
10:30 - 11:45 am - Conducting Effective Interviews
An effective interview process not only helps ensure you select the best candidate for the job, but it is also part of your “employer brand.” From applicant evaluation to interviewing to notifying unsuccessful candidates, your process and a candidate’s experience of that process – positive or negative - can greatly impact your organization’s reputation. Learn how to make a good impression on candidates while avoiding potentially sticky situations.
Presenter: TBD
11:45 am - 12:30 pm - Lunch
12:30 - 1:45 pm - You’ve Selected Your Top Candidate – Now What?
How do I negotiate the terms of a job offer with a candidate? What should I include in the offer letter? Do I call references before or after a conditional job offer? Do I need to do a criminal background check on minors? What should you do if there are red flags when conducting references or background checks? Should all or some positions have a pre-placement physical? What union considerations should I keep in mind? This session will cover all these questions and more.
Presenters: Liam Gallagher, Town of Scarborough Assistant Town Manager and Joanne LePauloue, City of Westbrook Human Resources Director
1:45 - 2:00 pm - Break
2:00 - 3:15 pm - Legal Pitfalls
Recruiting involves more than just finding a candidate who will be a great fit for the job; it’s also about ensuring recruitment and hiring practices comply with the law. It is important for anyone involved in recruiting to have a solid understanding of fair hiring practices, data privacy, EEO and ADA considerations, and more. This session will help you navigate legal challenges in recruitment so you can avoid making mistakes that have the potential to place your organization in a sticky legal situation.
