Accepting applicants for PARKS WORKER with the City’s Public Works Department. Applications are available at the Human Resources Department or online at www.lewistonmaine.gov

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Department:    Public Works

Division:          Trees & Open Spaces Division

Barg. Unit:       AFSCME- Public Works Unit

Status:             Full-Time 40+ hours/week

Grade:             3/4  (starting at $20.38 - $21.43/hour) Depending on license.

SUMMARY: Parks Workers have a direct impact on the overall appearance and maintenance of all public areas within the City of Lewiston. Learn a new trade while enjoying each day working outdoors!

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent, plus three (3) years experience in landscaping, construction, snow removal, tree work, or related field. Background in landscaping/open space maintenance is ideal.

WORK ACTIVITIES: Operate chainsaws, chippers and weed brush cutters. Perform landscape maintenance for publicly owned properties to include mulching, weeding, mowing, raking, and planting trees, flowers and shrubs. Perform tree climbing and trimming with ropes and saddles. Remove stumps, install lawns, tree wells and other landscaping/hardscaping structures using materials such as timber, bricks, cobblestones, and pavers. Identify trees and plant life, including checking for diseases and insects. Takes an active role in snow removal and snow plowing operations. May operate various pieces of equipment, depending on license status. Must be able to complete accurate records of time and materials used. Will take part in ongoing training regarding equipment skills and other operations. Interact with the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Must be available for emergency operations and overtime, as required.  Able to follow oral and written instruction, and perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS: Must have a valid State of Maine Class C driver’s license. Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within first six (6) months of employment. Must be registered as an Apprentice Arborist with the State of Maine within first six (6) months of employment, and able to obtain a Maine Arborist license.
